Eulogy
What is strange, digesting your death, Andrew, is that I have been doing so, in a way, since just after we drifted apart. It was in 2006, perhaps 2007, when you told me that you’d tried [drugs]. I told you that I was scared of it and didn’t like it, but we weren’t hanging out every day anymore, and weeks and even months were going by without spending any planned time together....

Correspondence
About 5 times in the last 2 weeks, I’ve told myself to sit down and write a note to my friends in Bruxelles to let them know what’s going on in my life. Can I be blamed that I don’t want to recount how my uncle died, my cousin’s relationship ended because of abuse and infidelity, how my work subordinate and good friend suffered an aneurysm and is only alive because I...

I have gone full-on crazy. Just laid on my roof for 10 minutes, waving at the top-floor neighbors, using the flash of my BlackBerry camera to get their attention. The 14 year old boy saw me, called his parents, and they shut the blinds. WHEREUPON I entered their building through the roof door, and taped a sign in their lobby about the found cat. Cat burglar/cat on a hot tin roof jokes, just...

Revelation I should have had at least 5 years ago:
Since 7th grade, I’ve had 13+ hour days. In high school, it was for theatre, or musical, or Model UN or yearbook. In college, it was for a cappella, or musical, or choir, or tour guiding, or studying. And every job I have had since 2005 has involved events, usually three or so nights per week, or at least 11-hour days. So, for 6 years of my career, and 9 or 10 years of school, I’ve...

I found this video filmed by Sylvan Lanken, a McGarrigle cousin, of Kate McGarrigle’s 63rd Birthday. It seems that it is in Rufus’ New York apartment, with Martha, Rufus, Anna, and lots of family and friends. It was the last birthday Kate celebrated, and following a song written in her honor, “Kate is 100,” the first thing she does is profess her love for Rufus and Martha....

It is so odd, I find, to write the most emotional words I’ve ever written - and maybe even spoken - to someone, not in English, but in French. They are at once surprising and confusing, and all the more meaningful. Because I have chosen them, considered them, and thought them so many times in my heart. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: mon cœur reste en France, et...

On finding my choice.
Writers and songwriters talk about finding their voices all the time. After a visit with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi or a life-changing personal experience, many have identified being able to give words or music to feelings previously impossible to express. Well, I am not a writer or a musician, but over the past few weeks, I think that it’s safe to say that I found not my voice, but my...

From my roof in Carroll Gardens, not only do I have a stunning view of the towers of light at the World Trade Center site, but I can also see the flashes of cameras taking photographs of them from the top of the Empire State Building. Pretty neat.

I'm probably going to see the Facebook movie
cherrispryteaintsobrite: Mostly because of the creepy version of Creep. But also because I am a huge fan of the movies of Justin TImberlake. SOUTHLAND TALES and a ravaged mid-Island cinema.
